Peru Calixto Quispe Mullisaca

Peru Calixto Quispe Mullisaca

Cherry Limeade Clove Gardenia
Our first Peruvian filter coffee in a long time, Calixto Quispe Mullisaca was a stunner at our cupping table. We found a very drinkable cherry limeade-type acidity, with complex botanical notes of clove and gardenia, as well as an incredibly well focused and clean body that made it an instant love for us. This is a perfect coffee for these early days of Spring, like a blast of much needed sunlight on a crisp, windy day.

This coffee is a lot of 100% Caturra varietal, grown on a 4 hectare farm in Yanahuaya, located at 1900 meters above sea level. The farm is split into one 2 hectare lot of Caturra and another 2 hectares of Bourbon.

Puno, Peru

Puno historically has been an excellent region for growing coffee, but frought with issues due to competition with a much more profitable crop: coca. The UN promoted coffee growing here in the 1980s, even going so far as to import Bourbon plants, a strange decision considering the ubiquity of hybrid varietals in the rest of Latin America. Puno produces very little coffee now, but what is produced is very high quality and nuanced, and often reminiscent of East African coffees.
