Kenya Marimira PB

Kenya Marimira PB

Papaya Lime Hazelnut
Marimira PB is not the typical Kenyan coffee we purchase. It’s our first peaberry, and from Murang’a County, a new region to our menu. It’s very unique, with a cup profile of tangy fruits like papaya and lime, rounded out by hazelnut, much “greener” tasting than the traditional red fruits and wine of Kenyan coffees.

This lot from the Marimira factory is graded as peaberry, the smallest size in the Kenyan coffee grading system. The green is dense and as small as many Ethiopian coffees we purchase, but with much more even variation. We find these smaller Kenyan coffees often have more in common with Ethiopian coffee in the cup as well.

Murang'a County, Kenya

Marimira Factory was founded in 1966 in the Marimira subregion of Murang’a County, which lies just northeast of Nairobi, and is bordered by the well known coffee regions of Nyeri and Kirinyaga that lay under the shadow of Mt Kenya. The farmers that serve Marimira still have access to the same red volcanic soils of their northern neighbors, just originating from the Aberdare Mountains instead. Elevations here are lower than other East African coffee regions, around 1400-1600 meters, but the high end acidity we desire is still very present.
