Kenya Gichathaini

Kenya Gichathaini

Kenya Gichathaini is a wonderful washed process coffee from Nyeri County, bursting with bright lime and berry acidity that make it an absolute pleasure to drink. This AA sized lot is made up of crops grown on the eastern side of Mt. Kenya, in almost ideal growing conditions with abundant rainfall, rich red volcanic soil, and high elevation. This is the same coffee we selected for our Big Day Out instant coffee collaboration with Windthrow, as an example of how you can still brew a bright and juicy cup of coffee, even on the trail.

This coffee was processed using the well-regarded "Kenya process," a unique version of the washed coffee process to Kenya, where process quality is paramount. Washing stations first meticulously sort cherry, before depulping and then fermenting the coffee in 3 separate stages, before being washed and then dried on raised beds. This triple fermentation is largely thought to be responsible for Kenyan coffees fruit and wine-forward flavors.

Gichathaini, like all other Kenyan coffees, is a day lot made up of many smallholder farmers' crops. The Kenyan coffee system forbids direct relationships with producers and mandates that all coffees are processed by cooperatives and sold by licensed exporters. This unfortunately dilutes individual crops' terroir and disincentivizes agronomic improvements, but highly prioritizes processing quality.
