Ethiopia Mate Matiwos

Ethiopia Mate Matiwos

Green Mango Orgeat Rose
This is a coffee you don’t want to miss. Mate Matiwos won second place in Ethiopia’s Cup of Excellence this year, and it’s easy to see why. This coffee exhibits none of the typical flavors of a natural Ethiopian, instead we found it to have a green mango, almond syrup, and rose flavor profile, almost reminiscent of a well crafted tiki cocktail. It really is stunning, and might be our favorite coffee of the harvest.

Mate Matiwos’ family has long been in the coffee business, and it was only a matter of time till he got involved as well. As soon as he had a stable economic position from trading commodities locally, Matiwos leased land in Keramo and Danche to produce coffee. And he has a natural talent for it: the green is absolutely immaculate for a natural, which shows intense care during processing, and with an intoxicating tropical scent.

Of course a big part of why this coffee is so special is being traceable directly to Mate Matiwos and him alone. Most producers have to blend their coffee together with hundreds of others at cooperative-run processing station, eliminating all of the individual difference of each farm. This blending is likely the culprit for why Ethiopian coffees can exhibit a fairly narrow band of flavors: washed coffees taste like peach and black tea, naturals taste like blueberry.
