Ayele Tulu has had a relatively recent entrance into the coffee business, but it shows how entwined the coffee plant is with the rhythms of life in Ethiopia. After a 45 year career in government, he started a washing station in his hometown of Bona Zuria, to have something to pass down to his children. They buy cherry from 300 smallholder farmers in the area, and process them as naturals, anaerobic naturals and washed coffees.

For much of Ethiopian coffee, arrangements like Ayele’s are the best case for getting quality, traceable specialty grade coffees. Because Ayele is a small independent exporter with his own processing station, he can bypass the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange to sell directly to exporters. While not as ideal as a single farm lot, when Ethiopian coffee farms are so small, some degree of blending together is a necessity to meet logistical realities.
